In mid-2020, the South African Police Service released the country's overall crime stats for the year 2019/2020. Overall in the last year, carjacking, robberies of non-residential properties and murders all increased from the previous year. Sexual offences, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and possession of illegal firearms were also up. Also at least 12 people were killed and hundreds arrested after mobs attacked foreign-owned shops in Johannesburg and Pretoria in 2019. The attacks drew condemnation from across the African continent. Xenophobic attacks in South Africa are perpetrated by the belief that foreigners-mainly migrants from other African countries-are to blame for South Africa's social and economic woes. So the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has to explain to his people that they themselves have to take responsibility for South Africa's problems; data indicating that the country faces bigger challenges than hosting foreign nationals, and that undocumented immigrants have become scapegoats for crime in South Africa's major urban cities. Certainly the country has a serious crime problem with over 21,000 people killed in 2019/20 - and sexual offenses, assault, and robberies have also risen. However, it must be emphasised, that it is not possible to conclude that foreigners commit most of these violent crimes; as in many cases the police do not have the information who the perpetrators actually are. So there are a lot of challenges President Cyril Ramaphosa needs to resolve in South Africa, so that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) can be upheld in South Africa; especially Article 3 of the UDHR: Right to Life, Liberty, Personal Security and Artice 7: All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. This includes overcoming Covid-19 peacefully, without using police violence. Also, amid the COVID-19 Pandemic it is very important that social distancing guidelines are implemented by the government; including hand hygiene, cleaning, occupancy and indoor space and air managements, and appropriate protective equipment. Furthermore, the implementation of a Basic Income Guarantee and basic health insurance are essential - so that people can provide for themselves and their children, and are not penalised for upholding social distancing guidelines; which are essential so that COVID-19 can finally be overcome in South Africa and the International Community.
