Amid the drug-fuelled violence that has ¿racked Mexico in recent decades, tens of thousands of men, women and children have simply vanished. The official total is 73,000, but the true number of desaparecidos, the disappeared, is unknowable¿. Successive national and state governments have proved indifferent to the plight of victims' relatives, who are often forced to search for the bodies themselves. Thousands of clandestine graves have been found across the country - many of them in Veracruz. In 2017, 250 human skulls were found crammed into the largest ever such grave, not far from the port city which shares the state's name.Criminal networks with political protection have found that anyone can be disappeared: rival criminals, inconvenient witnesses, drug addicts and politicians. Therefore it is imperative that President López Obrador and his government make a greater effort to fight crime, impunity and political corruption in Mexico; so that rule of law can be restored in Mexico. This includes countering and preventing violence against Mexican journalists; as Mexico has sadly become one of the world's deadliest countries for members of the press. In 2019, Mexico suffered the second highest number of killings of journalists after war-torn Syria, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Especially journalists who cover sensitive subjects such as crime, politics and the security forces are at risk of being attacked and killed in Mexico - therefore criminal organisations and individuals involved in the attacks and killings of Mexican journalists must be charged, convicted and punished. Also, drug control laws in the International Community must be improved, to counter and prevent the trafficking of illegal highly addictive ultra-potent synthetic opioids. As of 2020, the Sinaloa Cartel remains Mexico's most dominant drug cartel; which the DEA (US Drug Enforcement Administration) describes as a prominent producer and trafficker of Mexico-based fentanyl into the United States. Hence it is imperative that a crackdown is ordered on Mexico's drug cartels and corrupt Mexican officials colluding with criminal groups - such as the Sinaloa cartel, the Jalisco Cartel, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Templar Cartel, Las Viagras, La Unión Tepito and the Nueva Familia Michoacana - by implementing an effective multi-national anti-cartel strategy; so that those criminal organisations and individuals can be charged, convicted and punished.
