Statistical Mechanics

An Introductory Graduate Course

Buch

In a comprehensive treatment of Statistical Mechanics from thermodynamics through the renormalization group, this book serves as the core text for a full-year graduate course in statistical mechanics at either the Masters or Ph.D. level. Each chapter contains numerous exercises, and several chapters treat special topics which can be used as the basis for student projects. The concept of scaling is introduced early and used extensively throughout the text. At the heart of the book is an extensive treatment of mean field theory, from the simplest decoupling approach, through the density matrix formalism, to self-consistent classical and quantum… Mehr

Sloan Foundation Fellow and he is a Fellow of the American Physical Sollciety.Brooks Harris received his PhD from Harvard in 1962. He was a post-doc at Duke University and at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell in the UK. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1962, where he is now Professor of Physics Emeritus.  Brooks was an Alfred P. Sloan and John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and, he is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.  In 2007, he was awarded the Lars Onsager Prize of the  American Physical Society, For his many contributions to the statistical physics of random systems, including the formulation of the Harris criterion, which has led to numerous insights into a variety of disordered systems.
